Swarm Season

We have been busy in the bee yards getting ready for the bees to expand and grow this spring. New queens are being reared to replace queens where needed (re-queening), and where we are able to split strong hives.

Some hives are going through a swarm response – we’ve had a couple eerie moments when a whole hive started swarming in our hosts’ parking lot!

Remember that swarms are typically not aggressive at all (not that honey bees usually are) and just want to find a new home. We used to be on the swarm list, but it’s a little much at the moment. Nonetheless, you can call your local Sheriff who has access or just check out the Prairie State Beekeepers’ swarm list here for the Springfield area here.
